HISTORY

Herdade dos Alfanges is located near the village of Vila Nova da Baronia in the Alentejo, a place once part of the historic Barony of Alvito, the first barony of Portugal, created by King Afonso V for João Fernandes da Silveira in 1475. The village features the 16th‑century Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Assunção (Church), the Manueline Ponte do Azinhal bridge, and the pelourinho, a stone pillory in the main square that symbolized municipal authority and justice under royal charter. These landmarks reflect the village’s historical importance in the region. In the surrounding area are many roman ruins of the time when the romans were here. The Moors and Arabs also lived on these lands in the 800's.

Herdade dos Alfanges, which means “Farm of Alfanges,” was built in the 1600s. The name “Alfanges” comes from the word alfanje, meaning Arab sword. The farm spans 90 hectares of ancient olive groves, cork and Iberian oak trees, and pastures where sheep graze throughout the year. Since arriving in 2017, we have focused on restoring the land, caring for the trees, building an olive mill, and opening two houses to guests. Each autumn, we harvest and press our olives to produce organic, cold-pressed extra‑virgin olive oil that has received Gold Medal awards.

The region Herdade dos Alfanges is located in is called the Alentejo, meaning “beyond the Tejo." It is Portugal’s rural heartland, with open landscapes of cork oak, olive trees, and vineyards, marked by ancient megalithic circles and dolmens. At its center is Évora, a UNESCO World Heritage city where Roman, Moorish, and Renaissance influences meet. Whitewashed towns, slow-cooked dishes, and rich wines create a rhythm of life that invites visitors to relax and take their time.

Some visitors speak of the area’s “Bovis energy value,” a concept used by believers in radiesthesia. While it is not scientifically recognized, some claim to feel a high Bovis energy value on our land that helps them sleep well, relax, and replenish their bodies. We encourage guests to experience the atmosphere for themselves and draw their own conclusions.
