DA BARONIA OLIVE OIL
At Herdade dos Alfanges, we produce our own olive oil from the ancient olive trees that grow across the land. Our oil is organic, cold-pressed, and extra virgin, made from traditional Portuguese varieties such as Cobrançosa, Galega, and Bical.
We have around 1,600 olive trees, most of them between 300 and 1,000 years old—planted sometime between 1100 and 1700 AD. No one knows exactly who planted them, as they are not arranged as a typical olive grove. Instead, they grow freely among cork oaks, stone oaks, and wild vegetation, creating a natural and diverse landscape.
Guests can join an olive oil tour of about two to three hours, which includes a walk among the old trees, a visit to the mill and a guided olive oil tasting with regional products. It is an opportunity to see first hand how organic olive oil is made from the trees to the bottle.
Each year, between September and October, we harvest the olives and press them in our own mill. If you're interested in volunteering during the harvest, feel free to get in touch with us here.
